About Us

WWAOS is based at The Playhouse, Walton on Thames, where our performances are staged and where most of our rehearsals take place. The Society was formed in 1925 and, apart from the war years, has staged productions every year and now has over 130 to its credit.

We are a friendly and enthusiastic society, performing two main musical shows each year plus Music Hall and Compilation shows.

It's not all hard work, there is a tremendous amount of fun and enjoyment and we are always looking for new members to share this with us, both on stage and as crew, lighting etc. We aim to produce good quality performances in a social and convivial atmosphere. Our rehearsal nights are generally on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the occasional Sunday nearer to a show week. Our main shows run Monday to Saturday, with a Saturday matinee. WWAOS is affiliated to the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA).

The Venue

The Walton Playhouse has been used to stage all of our productions, except for three shows in 1965/66 when, due to fire damage, they were produced at Halliford School, Shepperton. The building was originally owned and built by Cecil Hepworth, who ran the film studios. It was the power generating house for the studios. In 1925 it was bought privately and turned into a hall/theatre. Later it was acquired by the local Borough Council, and is let out for public shows and events. It is a stand-alone building which has the ambience of a small theatre and now has raised rear seating. It boasts a bar room, and there is easy access for disabled patrons.

Recent Shows

"Crazy For You" The "new" Gershwin musical, an all singing all dancing extravaganza based on the 1930s musical "Girl Crazy". It is the story of well-to-do playboy Bobby Child whose dream is to dance, in spite of efforts by his mother and his fiancee. It's an energetic comedy with classic Gershwin numbers and plenty of dance. "I Got Rhythm", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Nice Work if you can Get It" and "Embraceable You" tio name but some.
Staged May 18th - 23rd 2009.

"Fiddler on the Roof" A stirring but highly entertaining musical centred on Tevye -a poor dairy farmer and his wife and five daughters in Anatevka -an oppressed Jewish village in early 1900's Russia. Perhaps most famous for the song "If I Were a Rich Man", but contains many other well known songs.
Staged April 2008.

"Mack & Mabel" Story based on the stormy relationship between early movie director Mack Sennett and beautiful actress Mabel Normand. Plenty of comedy with the Keystone Kops, Fatty Arbuckle, and rich beautiful songs and music.
Staged April 2008.

"Pirates of Penzance" A rollicking band of pirates attempt to take a bevy of beautiful maidens as their wives- but not if their father Major General Stanley and the local bungling police force can help it! Possibly the best of G & S.
Staged September 2007.

"Musicality" A well-presented variety musical show with a background theme of an amateur society auditioning singers and dancers, followed (in the second act) by the brilliantly costumed show itself.
Staged September 2007.

"The Beggar's Opera" -Written over 300 years ago by John Gay, this is a bawdy tale of highwaymen, betrayal, imprisonment, escape, recapture. Not an opera but a "play with songs", with beautifully constructed music of the 18th century. Staged April-May 2004.

"Blitz!"  -Lionel Bart’s popular show centres on London’s East End in 1940. The fears, hopes, joy and sadness of wartime Londoners are reflected in this wonderful musical, with scenes ranging from the cramped Tube shelter to the bustle of Petticoat Lane market.       We are delighted to have been honoured with the presence of Dame Vera Lynn in our matinee audience, a Gala Performance in support of her chosen charity.
